Lea Salonga is joining HBO Max’s upcoming series, Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin— a reboot of the popular mystery drama series, Pretty Little Liars. Salonga is set to become a series regular, starring as one of the moms of the show’s young protagonists.
Salonga shared the news on social media with the caption: “The moms have descended upon the town of Millwood! And we have secrets and lies of our own (can’t let the children have all the fun)! So excited to be part of the cast of Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin!”
According to Deadline, Salonga will play the role of Elodie, the overbearing mother of Minnie, who works overtime to ensure the safety of her daughter following a traumatic event Minnie experienced when she was just a little girl.
Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin is set to introduce a new story, a new generation of Little Liars, and a new town. Set in the town of Milwood, the reboot will follow a group of disparate teen girls who are stalked by an unknown assailant, determined to make them pay for a secret sin their parents have committed twenty years ago. While it’s a new story, the setting exists in the same universe as the original series, so fans may expect appearances from the original cast along the way.
Pretty Little Liars is based on the bestselling books by Sara Shepard. The original series starred Lucy Hale, Shay Mitchell, Ashley Benson, Troian Bellisario, and Sasha Pieterse. It ran from 2010 to 2017, while its two spin-offs, Pretty Little Liars: Ravenswood and Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists ran for one season each.
Joining Lea Salonga as the moms of Milwood are Sharon Leal, Elena Goode, Zakiya Young, and Carly Pope. Alongside them are the latest Little Liars, Chandler Kinney, Maia Reficco, Bailee Madison, Zaria, and Malia Pyles. Alex Aiono, Mallory Bechtel, and Eric Johnson are also part of the cast.
Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa writes the reboot alongside Lindsay Calhoon Bring. Lisa Soper directs the first two episodes. Its release date is yet to be revealed.
