Broadway star Cynthia Erivo and American singer Ariana Grande will be defying gravity as they’re set to star in Universal Pictures’ upcoming big-screen adaptation of hit Broadway musical Wicked! Erivo is taking on the role of Elphaba while Grande will be playing Elphaba’s bubbly roommate Glinda.
The announcement was made by director Jon M. Chu, who shared the good news on Twitter saying, “Get ready for a match up like you’ve never seen!!! In pink and green!!!”

Erivo and Grande also took to Instagram their reactions on getting the role and shared photos of flowers they sent each other after receiving the news.
Wicked is a Broadway musical that re-imagines the Land of Oz. It’s set in a fantasy world of witches, wizards, and magic and it tells the story of an unlikely friendship between a popular blonde girl named Glinda and a misunderstood, green-skinned girl named Elphaba. It follows their journey as they become the iconic Glinda The Good and the Wicked Witch of the West who we got to know from L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
The musical, which features the music and lyrics of Stephen Schwartz and the book by Winnie Holzman, debuted on Broadway in 2003, with Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth playing Elphaba and Glinda. The production was nominated for 10 Tony Awards, with Menzel winning the award for Best Actress.
The upcoming movie adaptation will be coming from director Jon M. Chu, who also directed Crazy Rich Asians and the big-screen adaptation of In the Heights.
Cynthia Erivo previously appeared in the Broadway production of The Color Purple as Celie Harris Johnson and in Genius as Aretha Franklin. Meanwhile, Ariana Grande traces her career beginnings in the Broadway production of 13, where she played the character of Charlotte, and in the Nickelodeon show Victorious. She’s also set to star in Adam McKay’s Don’t Look Up, coming to Netflix this December 24.
More details about this film are yet to be announced by Universal Pictures.
